Section 02 — Executive Summary
A Program Built from First Principles
PRECISION ELITE™ is Altaris Defense’s product-line designation for its rifle-barrel component program. The program is organized around four engineering elements: specialty alloy selection, contour architecture, bore and rifling geometry, and pre-field verification.
This page describes the Altaris Optimized Contour 6.5 Creedmoor / 27-Inch configuration — AOC-65-27. The configuration pairs Carpenter A-21® stainless steel with a 27-inch barrel architecture developed for long-range rifle platforms.
This webpage concerns barrel components only. Altaris Defense does not present this configuration as a complete firearm, tuned ammunition package, or universal accuracy guarantee.
“Precision begins before the first round is fired.”

Program Pillars
Signature Inputs & Program Pillars
Four engineering elements define the PRECISION ELITE™ rifle-barrel component program: specialty alloy selection, contour architecture, bore and rifling geometry, and pre-field verification. Each pillar maps a controllable input to its engineering role in the AOC-65-27 configuration.
- Specialty Alloy Selection → Carpenter A-21® Stainless Steel (Material basis for the AOC-65-27 configuration)
- Contour Architecture → Altaris Optimized Contour (Smooth linear taper from breech to muzzle)
- Bore and Rifling Geometry → 5R-Style ECM Rifling (1:7.75 RH constant twist)
- Pre-Field Verification → Documented Verification Practices (Air gage inspection, borescope review, straightness verification, bore-referenced exterior turning)
Section 03 — Why Barrels First
Why Barrels First
The barrel is the heart of a rifle. It is the component where material discipline, bore quality, surface condition, thermal behavior, and contour geometry compound into the character of the entire system.
Beginning here with barrels is not an accident of scope. It reflects the Altaris first-principles approach: start where the work most directly shapes how the whole rifle behaves, and treat its creation as a unified engineering decision rather than a sequence of disconnected vendor steps.
Barrels are where the program begins because barrels are where rifle character begins.
Section 04 — Precision, Defined
What Precision Means Here
Inside the PRECISION ELITE™ program, precision refers to the integrity of the build itself — the standards that govern how the work is done.
It means disciplined design, deliberate material strategy, controlled manufacturing, refined dimensional and interface execution, and system-level engineering rigor. It describes the alloy selected, the bore prepared, the surface specified, the contour designed around its cartridge, the interface finished — the discipline behind the object.
Precision here is the union of disciplined design, deliberate materials strategy, controlled manufacturing execution, and refined finishing — the integrity of the build itself, not a claim about how the object performs downrange.
What PRECISION ELITE™ means:
- Disciplined design intent
- Deliberate materials strategy
- Controlled manufacturing process
- Refined machining quality
- Considered interface integration
- System-level engineering rigor
Section 05 — Build Philosophy
How the Barrel Is Built
01 — Steel: Precision Starts in the Steel
The barrel program begins with deliberate alloy selection. Barrels in the PRECISION ELITE™ program are centered on Carpenter A-21® stainless carburizing steel (UNS S41429), selected for its balance of strength, impact toughness, corrosion resistance, and resistance to thermal fatigue. Material is specified to VIM-VAR melt practice and QT130 condition to support consistency of mechanical properties across production lots.
02 — Bore: Bore Quality Before Ballistics
A barrel’s identity is formed inside the bore. The PRECISION ELITE™ philosophy treats bore preparation as a controlled engineering step, not a pass-through operation before rifling.
03 — Surface: Surface Finish with a Purpose
The goal is not a mirror-polish claim. The goal is a functional surface condition prepared for rifling, finishing, surface treatment, and long-term consistency. Not too rough. Not over-polished. Specified for the system.
04 — Contour: A Contour Designed Around the Cartridge
The PRECISION ELITE™ contour philosophy is caliber-specific. The AOC-65-27 is configured for the thermal and stiffness demands commonly associated with 6.5 Creedmoor long-range rifle platforms. The contour retains breech-section mass and selected forward-section mass to support the stiffness profile of the assembled barrel within the parameters of the program’s design intent. The profile avoids abrupt steps and uses a smooth linear taper from breech to muzzle.
05 — Verification: Pre-Field Verification
The program incorporates pre-field verification practices including air gage inspection, borescope review, straightness verification, and bore-referenced exterior turning. These practices are used to confirm key product features before field deployment and document process discipline within the program. They are not a representation that any particular downrange performance outcome will result from use of the goods.
Section 06 — Technical Reference
Platform Showcase: The AOC-65-27
We applied the PRECISION ELITE™ manufacturing pillars to the 6.5 Creedmoor to demonstrate our material discipline and thermal-behavior management. This same architecture can be scaled to your specific platform needs.
What follows is the technical reference for the AOC-65-27 6.5 Creedmoor — the current cartridge focus of the PRECISION ELITE™ Rifle Barrel Program: material foundation, bore-and-surface philosophy, and caliber-specific contour geometry.
Section 01 // Structural Dynamics
Thermal Effects on Barrel Behavior
As barrel temperature rises during intensive firing strings, conventional lower-mass profiles may become less consistent in stiffness and vibrational behavior. Profile geometry and mass distribution can influence how the barrel behaves as heat accumulates. The AOC-65-27 contour is configured to address this structural concern through controlled mass distribution and a gradual, uniform transition through the mid-barrel structure.
Section 07 — Material Platform
Built Around an Advanced Stainless Material Platform
Modern barrel applications demand a combination of high strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance that can challenge conventional stainless barrel steels.
Development within the PRECISION ELITE™ program is centered on Carpenter A-21® stainless carburizing steel, UNS S41429, selected for its combination of toughness, stainless corrosion resistance, and thermal-fatigue resistance.
The alloy uses a titanium-carbide design in which titanium precipitates with carbon to form TiC particles rather than chromium-rich precipitates. This helps preserve chromium content and supports inherent corrosion resistance. The titanium carbides are small, uniformly distributed, and thermodynamically stable, contributing to grain control and thermal-fatigue resistance.
- Designation: UNS S41429
- Melt Practice: VIM-VAR (vacuum induction melted, vacuum arc remelted)
- Condition: QT130 (quenched and tempered)

Section 08 — Bore & Surface Philosophy
The Inside-Out Standard
Barrels in the PRECISION ELITE™ program are developed from the bore outward. Bore preparation, rifling method, surface condition, thermal-behavior management, and exterior contour are treated as connected decisions. The program is designed to avoid the common trap of treating barrel-making as a sequence of disconnected vendor steps.
5R-Style ECM Rifling
The bore is rifled using a 5R-style ECM (Electrochemical Machining) process. ECM is a non-contact material-removal rifling process selected to support a controlled bore condition while avoiding mechanical forming stresses associated with some traditional rifling methods.
The 5R-style rifling geometry is selected for projectile-to-bore interface characteristics applicable to the program’s intended cartridge chamberings and to manage jacket upset and copper accumulation characteristics observed in barrels of this configuration class.
The twist rate is 1:7.75 RH, constant across the bore length. The twist rate is specified for the 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge chambering and projectile mass range applicable to the AOC-65-27 configuration.
Surface finish is specified for function, not cosmetics: not too rough, not over-polished — a controlled functional surface tuned for rifling, finishing, and long-term consistency.
